Born 200 years ago in 1809, Charles Robert Darwin is celebrated as one of the greatest and most innovative scientists who ever lived. Circumnavigating the globe aboard HMS Beagle between 1831 and 1836, Darwin’s amassed a large number of natural specimens that led to his remarkable explanation for the incredible variety of living things – that evolution is driven by natural selection.

Marking Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday and coinciding with the 150 the anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859, this commemorative coin is struck by The Perth Mint.
Coloured Image of Charles Darwin
The coin’s reverse depicts a coloured portrait of Darwin at the age of 30 and an image of him in his 60s. As well as HMS Beagle, the design also portrays Darwin’s signature and the inscription CHARLES DARWIN 200TH BIRTHDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2009.
The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also appears on the reverse.

Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin portrays the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2009 year-date on the obverse.
